Track 6: High Tunnel Production

Season creation is the aspect of growing, producing, and substantially harvesting produce throughout the winter months in unheated greenhouses known as high tunnels. High tunnels are becoming a must have tool for produce farmers looking to extend the season in spring and fall, and to protect crops from weather, pests and disease during the growing season. If you are considering the purchase of a high tunnel or want to become more proficient at using the tunnels you have, this track is for you. Hear from experienced growers and marketers that run the Green Edge Gardens in Amesville, Ohio. They will share plenty of resources and offer guidance on planning, design and site selection, scheduling of crops, pest management, and helpful tips on harvesting, storage and marketing for your production. Green Edge Gardens emphasizes that while summer growing in possible in the high tunnels, winter production in these structures should be the focus to increase profitability. They will highlight the benefit of winter growing in that there is very little storage needs, as crops are simply stored by not harvesting until needed. There will also be opportunities to ask questions and share your own experiences.

Water for irrigation comes from a series of spring-fed ponds on the property. Eight greenhouses and various grow rooms ensure a year-round selection of seasonal vegetables, micro greens, and specialty mushrooms. Their certified organic produce is available to both wholesale and retail customers.

With a degree in sociology and criminal justice, Dan worked four years as a social worker before turning to farming and he hasn’t turned back. Dan has been the farm manager for Green Edge Gardens since 2004.
